How to Use a Dab Rig: Step-by-Step Beginner’s Guide

Dabbing has a reputation for being intimidating, but it really is not that complicated once you understand the basics. If you have been curious about how to use a dab rig for beginners, this guide will walk you through everything from assembling your setup to taking your first hit. The learning curve is shorter than you think.

What You Need Before Your First Dab

Before you fire up the torch, make sure you have all the essentials:

  • Dab rig — a small water pipe designed specifically for concentrates. They look similar to bongs but are usually smaller with different joint sizes.
  • Banger or nail — the heated surface where you place your concentrate. Quartz bangers are the most popular choice for beginners because they heat evenly and are easy to clean.
  • Butane torch — a kitchen torch works fine for starting out. Avoid standard lighters since they will not get the banger hot enough.
  • Dab tool — a small metal or glass pick used to handle and apply your concentrate.
  • Carb cap — a lid that sits over the banger to trap heat and improve vapour production.
  • Concentrate — shatter, wax, budder, live resin, or any other dabbable extract. Check out our complete concentrate guide if you are unsure which type to start with.
  • Timer or stopwatch — your phone works perfectly for this.

How to Use a Dab Rig: Step by Step

Step 1: Add water to your rig. Fill the base with enough water to submerge the downstem by about 2-3 centimetres. Test it by inhaling without any concentrate. The water should bubble gently without splashing into the mouthpiece.

Step 2: Prepare your dab. Use your dab tool to scoop a small amount of concentrate. For your first time, start with a piece about half the size of a grain of rice. You can always take another dab, but you cannot un-dab what is already in your lungs.

Step 3: Heat the banger. Point your torch at the bottom and sides of the banger, heating evenly for about 30-45 seconds until the quartz is glowing slightly red. This step is where most beginners go wrong by either under-heating or over-heating.

Step 4: Let it cool. This is crucial. After heating, set down the torch and wait 30-60 seconds. The ideal dabbing temperature is around 230-290 degrees Celsius. If you dab while the banger is still glowing, you will burn the concentrate, waste terpenes, and get a harsh, unpleasant hit. Patience pays off here.

Step 5: Apply the concentrate. Touch the dab tool to the inside wall or bottom of the banger while slowly inhaling through the mouthpiece. Rotate the tool so the concentrate melts off evenly.

Step 6: Cap it. Place the carb cap over the banger immediately after applying your dab. This traps the heat and allows the concentrate to vaporize at a lower temperature, producing smoother and more flavourful vapour.

Step 7: Inhale and exhale. Draw slowly and steadily. The vapour should be smooth and flavourful. If it tastes burnt, you dabbed too hot. If there is leftover oil pooling in the banger, you may need to wait less time during the cool-down.

Tips for Better Dabs

Clean your banger after every dab using a cotton swab while it is still warm. This prevents residue buildup that ruins flavour over time. Dip the swab in isopropyl alcohol for a deeper clean.

Low-temp dabs are your friend. It is better to err on the side of too cool rather than too hot. You can always reheat the banger gently to finish any remaining concentrate.

Stay hydrated. Dabbing can dry out your mouth and throat faster than smoking flower. Keep water nearby.
