How to Spot Fake Vape Cartridges: Safety Guide

With the cannabis vape market booming across Canada, counterfeit and unregulated cartridges have become a real concern. Knowing how to tell if a vape cartridge is real can protect your health and ensure you are actually getting what you paid for. Fake carts are not just a rip-off — they can be genuinely dangerous. Here is how to spot them before you take a single puff.

Why Fake Vape Cartridges Are Dangerous

The 2019 EVALI crisis made it painfully clear what can go wrong with unregulated vape products. Black-market cartridges have been found to contain vitamin E acetate, pesticides, heavy metals, and synthetic cannabinoids. None of these show up in properly manufactured legal products, but they are disturbingly common in counterfeits.

Fake cartridges exist because the profit margins are enormous. A counterfeiter can fill a cartridge with diluted or adulterated oil, slap on convincing packaging, and sell it at near-retail prices. The consumer has no way to test the contents at home, which makes visual and packaging checks your first line of defence.

How to Tell If a Vape Cartridge Is Real

Check for the excise stamp. In Canada, every legal cannabis product carries a round excise stamp featuring a cannabis leaf. The stamp should be properly affixed and difficult to peel off cleanly. If your cartridge has no excise stamp, it is not a regulated product, full stop.

Examine the packaging. Legal products in Canada must include: the licensed producer's name, a lot number, a packaging date, THC and CBD content per unit, Health Canada's standardized cannabis symbol, and health warnings. If any of these are missing, that is a red flag. Poor print quality, spelling errors, and blurry logos are also giveaways.

Inspect the oil. Quality cannabis oil should be a consistent golden to amber colour. If the oil is unusually dark, has visible particles, or separates into layers, something is off. When you turn the cartridge upside down, the oil should move slowly, taking several seconds to shift. If the bubble moves quickly, the oil may be diluted with cutting agents.

Check the hardware. Legitimate cartridges use quality materials. The mouthpiece should fit snugly, the glass should be clear and even, and there should be no visible glue or sloppy assembly. Cheap, poorly made hardware is a hallmark of counterfeit products.

Verify the brand. If the cartridge claims to be from a specific licensed producer, check that producer's website to confirm they actually make that product. Some counterfeits use entirely fictional brand names that sound legitimate. Others copy real brands but get small details wrong.

Red Flags That Should Make You Walk Away

  • Cartridges sold through social media, messaging apps, or unverified websites
  • Prices that seem too good to be true (if a 1g cart is $20 when retail is $45-60, something is wrong)
  • Packaging that can be easily opened without breaking a seal
  • No batch or lot number anywhere on the package
  • Seller cannot provide any information about the product's source or testing

Buying Safely in Canada

The simplest way to avoid fake cartridges is to buy from licensed retailers, whether that is a brick-and-mortar dispensary or a trusted online source. Licensed retailers in Canada are required to source exclusively from Health Canada-approved producers, which means every product on their shelves has passed regulatory testing.

If you are buying online, look for retailers with established reputations, clear return policies, and transparent sourcing. Avoid marketplace-style sites where anyone can list products.
