How to Choose a Cannabis Edible: Dosage, Types & Tips
Edibles are one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis โ but they work very differently from smoking or vaping. Here's everything a first-timer needs to know.
Why Edibles Are Different
When you eat a cannabis edible, your liver converts THC into a compound called 11-hydroxy-THC โ which is actually more potent and longer-lasting than the THC you inhale. This is why edibles hit differently: the onset is slower (30 minutes to 2 hours), but the effects are more intense and can last 4 to 8 hours.
This is also why the most common edible mistake is taking more before the first dose kicks in. The golden rule: start low, wait, then decide.
Types of Cannabis Edibles
At Creator's Choice, we carry a wide range of cannabis edibles, including:
Gummies
The most popular format. Gummies come in precise doses (typically 5mg or 10mg THC per piece), a variety of flavours, and are easy to dose and share. They have a longer shelf life and are discreet to carry.
Chocolate Edibles
Cannabis-infused chocolates offer a more indulgent experience. They're often broken into squares for easier portion control. Dark chocolate edibles tend to have a richer flavour profile that pairs well with the earthy notes of cannabis.
Beverages and Drink Mixes
Cannabis-infused drinks and drink powders are gaining popularity because they tend to have a faster onset than traditional edibles โ some as quick as 15 minutes. The effect is also typically shorter-lasting, which makes them a good option for controlled experiences.
Hard Candies and Mints
Absorbed partly through the mucous membranes in your mouth, hard candies can have a faster onset than stomach-absorbed edibles. They're discreet and convenient.
Understanding Dosage
Cannabis edible dosing is measured in milligrams (mg) of THC. Here's a general guide:
- 1โ2.5 mg โ microdose; mild effects; good for first-timers or low tolerance
- 5 mg โ standard beginner dose; noticeable relaxation or euphoria
- 10 mg โ standard recreational dose; clearly psychoactive; not recommended for first-timers
- 20โ50 mg โ high dose; for experienced users with significant tolerance
- 50 mg+ โ very high; typically reserved for medical patients with established tolerance
Tips for a Good First Edible Experience
1. Choose the Right Setting
For your first time, be at home or in a comfortable, familiar environment. Have water, snacks, and something relaxing to do โ music, a movie, or a book.
2. Don't Mix With Alcohol
Combining edibles with alcohol significantly amplifies the effects and increases the chance of a negative experience. Wait until you know how you respond to edibles on their own.
3. Eat a Small Meal First
Taking edibles on an empty stomach can cause a faster, more intense onset. Having a light meal beforehand can help moderate the experience.
4. Wait the Full Two Hours
It sounds obvious, but many first-timers take a second dose after 45 minutes because they "don't feel anything yet." Then both doses hit at once. Set a timer and wait the full 90โ120 minutes before deciding to redose.
5. Start With a CBD:THC Blend
Choosing a balanced 1:1 CBD:THC edible reduces the risk of anxiety and makes the high more manageable for new users. CBD doesn't cancel out the THC, but it does take the edge off.
What to Do If You Take Too Much
An overwhelming cannabis experience is unpleasant but not dangerous. If you feel like you've taken too much:
- Find a comfortable place to lie down
- Drink water and eat a small snack
- Try black pepper โ some people find sniffing or chewing it helps reduce anxiety
- Remind yourself the feeling is temporary and will pass
CBD can also help moderate an intense THC experience if you have some available.
