How to Store Weed: Keep Your Flower Fresh Longer

There is nothing worse than opening a jar of cannabis and finding it dry, crumbly, and flavourless. Knowing how to properly store cannabis flower is the difference between bud that stays fresh for months and bud that degrades within weeks. Proper storage preserves potency, flavour, and texture, saving you money and improving your experience every time you smoke.

Why It Matters: How to Properly Store Cannabis Flower

Cannabis degrades when exposed to four main enemies: light, heat, air, and moisture. Each one damages your flower in a different way.

Light breaks down THC into CBN, a cannabinoid that is much less psychoactive. This is why weed left on a windowsill loses its punch quickly. UV light is particularly destructive.

Heat accelerates the degradation of cannabinoids and terpenes. It also encourages mould growth when combined with moisture. Anything above 25 degrees Celsius starts to cause problems.

Air (specifically oxygen) oxidizes cannabinoids and dries out trichomes. Overexposure to air is the main reason flower loses its stickiness and aroma over time.

Moisture is a double-edged sword. Too much promotes mould and mildew. Too little makes flower brittle and harsh to smoke. The ideal relative humidity for cannabis storage is 55-62%.

The Best Storage Methods

Glass mason jars: The gold standard for home cannabis storage. Glass is non-porous, does not leach chemicals, and creates a good seal. Use a jar that fits your stash snugly to minimize excess air. Store the jar in a cool, dark place like a cupboard or drawer.

Humidity packs: Boveda or Integra Boost packs maintain a consistent humidity level inside your storage container. The 62% packs are ideal for cannabis. Toss one in your jar and it will regulate moisture automatically.

Avoid plastic bags and containers: Plastic creates static that pulls trichomes off the flower. Plastic bags also do not seal well and let air in. If you buy flower in a plastic bag, transfer it to a glass jar as soon as possible.

Avoid the fridge and freezer: Despite common advice, the fridge introduces temperature fluctuations and excess moisture every time you open the door. Freezing makes trichomes brittle and easy to knock off when handling. Room temperature in a dark spot is best.

Vacuum sealing: For long-term storage (several months or more), vacuum sealing in combination with a glass jar is the most effective method. Remove as much air as possible to slow oxidation. How Long Does Properly Stored Weed Last

With ideal storage conditions (glass jar, humidity pack, cool dark location), cannabis flower can maintain its quality for 6-12 months. After about a year, even well-stored flower will start to lose some potency and terpene richness, though it will still be safe to consume.

Poorly stored flower can degrade noticeably within 2-4 weeks. Dryness, loss of smell, and diminished effects are the first signs that your storage method needs improvement.

Quick Tips for Everyday Storage

  • Keep your jar in a cupboard, not on your desk or shelf where light hits it
  • Open your jar only when you need to access your flower
  • Do not grind more than you plan to use in a single session
  • Separate different strains into different containers to preserve their individual terpene profiles
  • Replace humidity packs every 2-3 months
