How to Make Cannabis Edibles at Home: Beginner’s Guide

Making your own cannabis edibles at home is easier than most people think, and in Canada it is completely legal for adults. Whether you want to bake classic pot brownies or infuse butter for cooking, learning how to make edibles at home starts with one essential step: decarboxylation. Skip it and your edibles will not work. Nail it and you will have a versatile infused ingredient that opens up endless possibilities in the kitchen.

Decarboxylation: The Step You Cannot Skip

Raw cannabis flower contains THCA, which is the acidic precursor to THC. THCA does not get you high. To convert it into active THC, you need to apply heat in a controlled process called decarboxylation — or "decarbing" for short.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Preheat your oven to 110 degrees Celsius (230 degrees Fahrenheit).
  2. Break your cannabis into small, roughly uniform pieces. You do not need to grind it fine — pea-sized chunks work well.
  3. Spread the cannabis in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 40 minutes, checking once or twice to ensure even heating. The cannabis should turn from green to a golden-brown colour.
  5. Let it cool completely before handling.

Your decarbed cannabis is now activated and ready to infuse into a fat-based carrier. For a more detailed walkthrough of temperatures and timing, check out our decarboxylation guide.

Making Cannabis Butter (Cannabutter)

Cannabis butter is the foundation of most homemade edibles. THC is fat-soluble, so it bonds readily with the fats in butter during a slow infusion process.

What you need:

  • 7-10 grams of decarbed cannabis
  • 1 cup (227g) of unsalted butter
  • 1 cup of water
  • Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
  • Mason jar or airtight container

Instructions:

  1. Combine the butter and water in a saucepan over low heat. The water prevents the butter from scorching.
  2. Once the butter is fully melted, add the decarbed cannabis.
  3. Simmer on the lowest possible heat for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. The mixture should never boil — keep it between 70-80 degrees Celsius.
  4. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth into a container, squeezing gently to extract all the liquid.
  5. Refrigerate overnight. The butter will solidify on top of the water, which you can pour off.

Your cannabutter is now ready to use in any recipe that calls for regular butter — brownies, cookies, sauces, toast, whatever you like.

Dosing tip: If you started with 7 grams of cannabis testing at roughly 20% THC, your total infusion contains approximately 1,400mg of THC (before accounting for some loss during decarbing and straining). Divide that by the number of servings in your recipe to estimate the per-serving dose. For example, if you make a batch of 28 cookies, each one contains roughly 50mg — a strong dose for most people.

Alternative Infusion Methods

Cannabis coconut oil works the same way as cannabutter but uses coconut oil as the fat base. Coconut oil has a higher saturated fat content, which some people believe extracts cannabinoids more efficiently. It is also vegan-friendly and works well in both sweet and savoury recipes.

Cannabis olive oil is a popular option for Mediterranean-style cooking. Use the same low-heat infusion method, but note that olive oil has a lower smoke point — it is best for drizzling, dressings, and low-temperature cooking rather than baking.

Tips for Consistent Homemade Edibles

Mix thoroughly. The biggest problem with homemade edibles is uneven distribution. When adding cannabutter to a batter, mix it extremely well to ensure consistent dosing across every serving.

Start with less cannabis. You can always make a stronger batch next time. An underwhelming first batch is far better than an overwhelming one.

Label everything. Store infused butter and oils separately from regular ingredients and mark them clearly. This is especially important in households with children or roommates.

Be patient with yourself. Homemade edibles are never as precisely dosed as commercial products. If you prefer exact dosing without the guesswork, our edibles collection at Creator's Choice offers professionally manufactured gummies and chocolates with consistent per-piece dosing.
