If you've ever looked at the bottom chamber of your grinder and found a fine, golden powder, you've already met kief. But what is kief and how to use it properly? Kief is the collection of trichomes β the tiny, crystal-like glands that coat cannabis flower β separated from the plant material. It's one of the most potent and versatile cannabis products you can get your hands on, and you're probably already accumulating it without realizing.
Understanding What Kief Is and How to Collect It
Trichomes are where cannabis produces its cannabinoids and terpenes. When those trichomes dry out and break away from the flower, they become kief. The easiest way to collect it is with a three- or four-chamber grinder that has a fine mesh screen at the bottom. Every time you grind your flower, a small amount of kief falls through and accumulates in the catch chamber.
If you want to speed up collection, try placing a clean coin on the screen and giving the grinder a shake after each use. Some consumers also use silk screens or pollen boxes to sift larger quantities of flower. The finer the screen, the purer the kief β lighter, sandier colour usually means fewer plant contaminants and higher potency.
Best Ways to Use Kief
Kief is remarkably flexible. Here are the most popular methods:
Sprinkle it on a bowl or joint. The simplest approach. Add a pinch on top of your packed bowl or mix it into your ground flower before rolling. This boosts potency without changing the flavour dramatically.
Press it into hash. Apply heat and pressure to kief and it compresses into hash. You can do this at home with parchment paper and a hair straightener, or simply press it between your fingers until it darkens and sticks together. If you're curious about traditional hash, check out our guide on temple ball hash.
Make moon rocks. Coat a dense nug in cannabis oil, then roll it in kief. Moon rocks are notoriously strong, so start small.
Infuse it into edibles. Because kief has a higher surface-area-to-mass ratio than flower, it decarboxylates quickly and evenly. Sprinkle it into butter or oil at around 110 C for 30-40 minutes and you have a potent base for baked goods or capsules. Our decarboxylation guide walks through the full process.
How to Store Kief Properly
Kief degrades faster than intact flower because the trichome membranes are already broken. To preserve potency and flavour:
- Keep it in a small glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Silicone containers work too, though some terpenes can leach into silicone over time.
- Store in a cool, dark place. Heat and UV light break down THC into CBN, which is less psychoactive.
- Avoid humidity. Moisture can cause kief to clump and develop mould. A small humidity pack rated at 55-58% RH helps if you're storing it long-term.
- Don't overfill the container. Kief compresses easily, and once it sticks together you lose the powdery consistency that makes it easy to dose.
Where to Get High-Quality Flower for Kief Collection
The better your starting flower, the better your kief. Trichome-heavy strains like Pink Kush, Gelato, and Death Bubba tend to produce generous kief yields. Browse our flower collection to find premium, trichome-rich buds that will keep your grinder's catch chamber full. If concentrates are more your speed, we also carry ready-made options in our concentrates section so you can skip the collection process entirely.
Kief is one of those hidden perks of being a regular cannabis consumer β it builds up quietly and rewards your patience with a potent, flavourful bonus. Collect it, store it well, and you'll always have a little something extra on hand.
